Graphic Novels

Not a genre but a form/format
Graphic novels can be history, fantasy, nonfiction etc. They encompass a lot of the other genres in this particular format.
Presenting the information in a more kid friendly format
Combine text and pictures to convey the story (fiction)
Differ from picture books because of their complexity
Parts of a graphic novel: cover and inside pages
Panels, Gutters, Dialog balloons, thought balloons, captions, sound effects

K: I know that graphic novels are set up more like a comic book format to engage readers in a different aspect.

W: I learned that graphic novels can engage all readers not just readers that are struggling to be engaged. I had the misconception that graphic novels were not as effective as regular novels. I also learned the different parts of a graphic novel and how they are set up.

L: I need to continue to explore how to use graphic novels in my classroom for all level readers. It is important for all readers to be able to read and adapt to a variety of texts.
