Realistic Fiction

Realistic Fiction
Known as Contemporary Realistic Fiction or Modern Realistic Fiction
They are believable and realistic.
Everything in the story is consistent with the real world.
Characters, settings, and events are real.

Criteria:
1.      Is everything consistent with the real world in which contemporary kids live? Is speech and behavior believable, and it is something that children will be able to relate and connect to. Realistic fiction must not have stereotypes.
2.    Does the theme emerge naturally, slowly, and consistently from the story? Good realistic fiction has more than one theme and it isn’t talking at you.
3.    How does the topic relate to modern readers? It tackles sensitive topics and tough topics that are/were considered to be taboo.

K: I know that realistic fiction encompasses events that could actually take place in real life. All of the events, settings etc. are realistic and could happen to me at this point in time. The only difference is the characters are fictional and made up.

W: I learned that realistic fiction has two other names that it goes by. I have never heard either of those terms. I also learned that realistic fiction discusses taboo or tough topics, and that is part of how to identify the genre.

L: I need to learn on how to identify multiple themes in a realistic fiction novel.

S: I will share this information through my blog: https://crabtreescleverkiddos.blogspot.com/ as well as through my lessons both in the library and/or a classroom.
