Assignments Chapters 2-8 KWL
What I KNOW about the topics:
After reading and reviewing chapters 2-8 I realized that I
was familiar with most of the content in each area. The great part about these
particular chapters was I got to go more into depth with some of the content
that I didn’t feel as confident with. I’ve taught 4th grade reading
for 7 years and 6th grade reading for one year and most of the
content I actually had to teach however after reading and watching the videos
provided my learning went further. Such as I understood the importance of
picture books, but really going into depth and reminding myself/refreshing my memory
about how meaningful picture books truly are was something I really enjoyed. I
felt pretty familiar with the majority of the terms that I came across
throughout the chapters however I did find myself going back and double
checking on a few. Traditional literature is always a fun unit, and I felt
pretty comfortable with all of the content in that chapter.
WHAT I learned about the topics:
The topics that stuck out to me the most were the poetry
chapter, the awards, and the anatomy of the book. The way that poetry was
presented in this particular chapter was different than what I had really seen.
I learned that poetry isn’t truly considered a reading genre and that we can
find poetry within all types of genres. That was something new for me. The way
to evaluate poetry was also something that I had never seen broken down like
that, so that was very helpful for me. The anatomy of the book chapter was
truly interesting to me. I had never heard of most of the vocabulary words
besides the cover, the spine, and of course various text features. This was
something new and fun for me to learn about. The awards were something that I
have heard of, but after going back and researching how each award was chosen
that gave it an entirely new meaning. I felt like that was something that would
be very helpful for me.
What I still need to LEARN about the topics:
I feel like I need more work with beats and rhymes within
poetry. Brushing up on terms like assonance and consonance was not something
that I have gone into great detail in during my teaching career. I still feel
like I need to get more familiar with the awards, what books have earned them,
and why. I feel as though the bibliographies that we create will also help with
that tremendously.
How will I share this with others?
I felt as though having to create a blog would be very beneficial
not only for the course, but it is a great way to share information. I have
Twitter that I use for my classroom, but using a blog is very interactive and
it is a great way to keep your information organized. I feel like my students
and parents could use and benefit from the blog that I create to share my
information. Another great way to share this particular information about would
be in like a weekly/monthly newsletter depending on what we were focused on
during our library time lessons for that time frame.
