History: Based off of events that happened in my lifetime
Allows readers to visualize and experience what it might
have been like to live in a previous time and place.
Criteria:
1.
Does the book tell a good story that blends in history
throughout the entire story?
2.
Are the facts of the historical period
accurate? *Use reviews as a source to help determine this.
3.
How are the values of this time brought to
life? *Readers should be able to see the differences between time periods
4.
Is every detail accurate to that particular
time period? Clothing, architecture of houses and buildings, music, the way the
characters speak.
5.
Does the theme relate to readers today?
Adapted from Charlotte
Huck's Children's Literature: A Brief Guide by Barbara Z. Kiefer and Cynthia A. Tyson. (2010)
pp. 212-237.
K: I know that historical fiction means that the time period and
setting are accurate however the characters are fictional. They are placed into this time period or setting as a part of the story line.
W: I learned that people view history in different ways and that
effects the perspective of how to identify this genre in literature.
L: I need to learn more about the criteria and how to identify
those specific details of the book to ensure they match the time period of the genre. I feel as though I need more background knowledge on various time periods, so I would be relying heavily on various resources to fact check the information provided in the text.
S: I will share this information through my blog: https://crabtreescleverkiddos.blogspot.com/
I am also able to share this information through my lessons when
how to identify various genres of books. The criteria used for
historical fiction is great to share with the reading teachers in order to pass along to their students in classroom setting.
